The UNDRR’s Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction is undergoing a formal mid-term review to take stock of implementation and impact since its launch in 2015, understand what context shifts have occurred, and identify how to accelerate uptake to 2030 and beyond. There is currently no formal policy position from engineers on the Sendai Framework.
Speaking at the closing lecture, Seth Schultz admitted that he had previously been sceptical that the engineering community was willing to make changes in order to deal with the climate emergency. But the profession has shown that it is, and this response was consistent around the world, and from very senior or retired engineers, right down to new graduates.

The WFEO Climate Stories series is a collection of blogs written by WFEO committee members about climate change in six countries from around the world: Australian, Canada, China, France, Kenya and the UK. The blogs looked at how climate change is affecting each country, attitudes to climate change, what is being done to reduce carbon emissions, and the role engineers can play. The UK has commitments in place to reduce carbon emissions to 0% by 2050. However to achieve this, carbon reduction needs to be embedded in the planning, design and whole life of assets. Engineers have a key role to play in enabling this to happen by understanding how climate change affects their roles in terms of mitigation and adaptation.
